Can't let him

The moon hid behind the clouds. The wind was chilly. It was as if someone could freeze to death when hit by the wind. However, two men did not mind the weather. They were running towards a dead-silent parking lot, almost tripping over an orange traffic cone.

“Where the hell is he?!” Jake heaved as he wiped the sweat off his forehead. He put his right hand on his partner’s, Kevin’s, left shoulder. Kevin was moving his head left and right. His eyes squinting at the dim area, which only had a blinking streetlamp as a light source.

“I swear to G—” Jake cursed but was cut off when an engine-like thing gave a deafening roar. Jake and Kevin both looked back. The culprit didn’t waste time kicking the pedal of the motor on and raced out of the parking lot. The vehicle ran towards the highway, trying to join the other cars that were moving north—at least that’s what it looked like.

“What the f—” Jake almost cursed but Kevin was already meters away from him. “Kev!” Jake shouted as he tried to catch up to his partner but stopped moving when his eye caught something.

Kevin felt like his heart was gonna jump out of his chest; he didn’t stop moving his legs though. If he did, then he would never be able to catch up to the man on the motorcycle. He was so close. So utterly close. If he didn’t catch up to that man right now, then they would be facing a dead end. AGAIN. He couldn’t let that happen. He ignored Jake’s shout.

“Kevin, stop!” Jake shouted as he grabbed Kevin’s right arm.

“Jake—,” Kevin tried to protest but didn’t finish his sentence when he saw what Jake was riding on. “Where the hell—,” he tried to complain.

“Ah! Before you accuse me of stealing, hop on!” Jake told him. “We’re gonna lose him!” he added when Kevin wasn’t responding.

Kevin closed his eyes and sighed. “Just this once and we are gonna talk about this later,” Kevin said as he slid over his leg on the other side of the motorcycle.

“Whatever. Don’t fall off.” Jake rolled his eyes. He positioned his hands on the motorcycle’s handles and guided it towards the direction where the culprit disappeared.
